A program launcher is an application designed to provide quick access to the software and documents on your computer. Program launchers typically attach themselves to the Windows Taskbar, thereby being accessible at all times. Some launchers are very basic, perhaps providing little more than an intelligent command-line interface. Other launchers may provide a window with user-programmable buttons, perhaps grouped in tabs with names such as Games and Office.
Maverick is more powerful than most program launchers. For instance :-
- you can display folders as a drop-menus.
- you can create multiple Launch Windows each with an unlimited number of buttons.
- each Launch Window has its own permanently-visible remnant and its own visual and behavioural properties.
- each Launch Button has its own visual properties and can perform tasks as diverse as printing documents, to opening websites.
- Launch Windows can be anchored to any screen edge (but the top and left are recommended). You can even create application bars - these are permanently visible like the Windows Taskbar.
Also, few other program launchers provide integrated utilities such file wiping (to irrevocably destroy files), file touching (to change date-time stamps), disk profiling (to analyse disk space usage) and both zip and zipfix utilities. However, for all its advanced visual features and integrated utilities, the most important features of any program launcher are that it can :-
- give you quick access to programs/applications and documents.
- be easily reconfigured when you install or remove other software.
Maverick is particularly strong in both these areas. In a typical configuration, if you want to open, say, NotePad, you would simply move the mouse over the remnant - the Launch Window will appear without even a mouse click - you then simply click the Notepad button. There is also extensive keyboard support.
You will have to look very hard to find another program launcher as powerful as Maverick that can give you instant access to the documents, applications, games, and other software installed on your computer.
Main Features
- Desktop icons can be hidden if you prefer to have a clean desktop.
- Launch Windows can have their own style and behaviour and
may contain as many buttons as you like.
Each can also have a permanently visible remnant that's used to reactivate it. - Launch Buttons can be used to open documents, folders, applications or even internet sites,
etc.
You also have access to Windows verbs such as properties and print, etc. - Folder drop-menus can be opened from buttons that point to folders.
- Versatile auto-eject options to avoid leaving CDs and floppy disks in their drives when Windows is shut down.
- A sophisticated alarm clock.
- Several integrated utilities :-
Dump to view a hex and ascii dump of a file.
FontMap to view fonts.
Obliterate to irrevocably destroy files.
Profile to help determine which files and directories occupy the most disk space.
ReadDisk can be used to scan a CDrom to perform a degree of validation.
Touch to adjust file creation and/or modification times.
Zip to perform zip file compression/decompression.
ZipFix to recover data from damaged archives. It can also assemble fragmented archives. - Zipfusion, though no longer included with Maverick, can be driven directly from Maverick to create self-extracting archives from zip files.
Maverick is designed to be intuitive but there is extensive online help that covers advanced features such as displaying only certain file types in folder drop-menus. However, most importantly, you should discover that the labours of trudging through endless menus from the dreaded Windows START button, or minimising windows to launch a desktop shortcut, can be a thing of the past. A Launch Window can be instantly activated either by using its remnant ¹ or by using its hotkey ².
| ¹ | The remnant is normally tucked away discreetly towards the top left corner of the screen. |
| ² | The hot-key defaults to either F10 or F12 depending on the installation but you may choose any reasonable value. |
